Before I get in to what I hung on the wall, or how long it will be up, I am chomping on one of the best Turkey sandwiches I have had in a long time.  You need to go to Meat, Cheese, Bread.  Now.  I am a sandwich whore, I love me a good one, and let me tell you, wow, good stuff.

On to the non-edible news.  I just hung 6 paintings at MCB, to be precise, 5 prints on plywood and one original painting.  The prints were from the "Monkey Business" show in March, now making their debut in PDX.

Swing by, check them out, and GRAB A SANDWICH!!!!

For all those in PDX, my show at Sequential Art Gallery in the Pearl downtown Portland opens tonight for 1st Thursday.  I'll attach the press release below.  The last month has been a rather hectic one, hence not a lot of pictures or comments.  As spring decides to fully show up, I'll be jamming away.  I will post the upcoming show schedule as well as adding the recently returned pieces from Phoenix to the SHOP.

If you are out and about tonight, swing on by, I'd love to see ya.

SPLINTERS: WOODEN STYLINGS FROM A WONDERING MIND, MAY AT SEQUENTIAL ART GALLERY

Opens: First Thursday, May 6, 6pm-10pm
Runs: Every Saturday in May, 11am-5pm, or by appointment
Closes: Saturday, May 29

PORTLAND, OR - Sequential Art Gallery's new show might be lacking in May flowers, but it does feature a lot of natural materials! Artist Brian Kappel works mainly in wood, either building small robots out of blocks or creating intricately inlaid large pieces of wall art. Much of his work utilizes vibrant stains and glazes instead of opaque paints, allowing the grain of his medium to show through and create rich textures within the art. The show will feature a number of these large format pieces, as well as some smaller works and design art, and opens during May's First Thursday art walk downtown.

Brian graduated with a degree in Visual Arts from Penn State University. Soon thereafter, he saved the day, beat the bad guy, and got the girl, just like in his favorite comics (truth be told, he only got the girl, but couldn’t be happier). His business, Space Monkey Designs, works with everyone from small companies just starting out to Fortune 500 companies. Through Space Monkey, Brian works with his local elementary school’s art literature program in an attempt to try and excite the next generation of artists, the way his teachers sparked the fire and set him on the path that he is on today.

Sequential Art Gallery + Studio is located in Old Town Chinatown at the Everett Station Lofts, 328 NW Broadway #113. Open for regular gallery hours and gaming every Saturday (11am-5pm) or by appointment. The gallery showcases local artists who explore the concept of sequential art, which is loosely defined as using consecutive images to tell a story. Curated by Kaebel JK Hashitani and Merrick Monroe.

Recent commissions and random thoughts

During a week when there is SO much to do, and SO much has been started, that just needs to be finished off, I found myself surrendering hour after hour to God of War III.  I still have not beat it, but alas it has bridged a nice gap leading up to the opening of "Clash of the Titans" tomorrow night.  Chalk the week up to "research"?!

Here are two recent commissions that I have done, one for Javier in LA, the other for Jenna here in Portland.  More photos coming soon, this weekend is going to be a productive one......as long as I can solve God of War.........Damn you Kratos.

I have been trying to get my wooden robots redesigned for sometime now.  Actually ever since the got slammed in Phoenix.  (Review is here).  In the spirit of the Six Million Dollar man, I have been convinced that I can make them better.  The block bots will always be my go to guys, they started this whole ride for me, but I needed to take the next step.  Enlisting the help of a true craftsman, my father, we worked through ideas and came up with the dudes below.  The next step is paint and inlay.  I'll post pictures as they come together.

I have been working away, getting canvases made for upcoming shows. Last night I finally got to put paint to board and started cranking out work for the gallery show in Portland's Pearl District.  The show starts in May, I will be posting more info as it gets closer.  For now though, a little eye candy for a rainy Thursday.

Chalk this one up to design compulsion.  I am not usually one to jump into competitions, but this one for whatever reason caught my eye.  Here in Portland, we have a great alternative radio station, 94.7 NRK.  They are running a contest for submissions for a concert poster for the April 3rd MUSE show here in town.  I totally wanted to submit designs for it, and honestly it has consumed my sketching for the last week or so.  Here is what I have so far, you can check out the other submissions here. There are a bunch of great other posters, and I am not sure it is even about winning, although that would be sweet, it was an urge I had to fulfill. **Update** I ended up not making the final 10, but enjoyed the fireworks from the rather upset folks who had issue with the judging.  Make no mistake, Portland is a creative town, and will go toe to toe with anyone tarnishing that reputation.
